It is an initiative promoted and developed in Milano by Slow Food, Politecnico di Milano, Facoltà di Scienze Gastronomiche and several other local partners. This project aims at regenerating the Milanese peri-urban agriculture (that is the agriculture near the city) and, at…See More

Do nothing Agriculture

Japanese natural farming pioneer Masanobu Fukuoka talks of the ideal of ‘do nothing’ agriculture. For him this is a spiritual principle, the Zen ‘mu’, as much as a practical guideline for the practice of sustainable agriculture. No chemical inputs, no genetic manipulation, no machines and no cultivation. In his small farm in Shikoku he consistently achieved better yields with higher biodiversity and less effort than the neighbouring fields with their intensive practice of modern agriculture. A…See More

Dec 6: Mushrooms are strange beings. They cannot be characterised as plants as they convert starch to carbohydrates and proteins without the benefit of chlorophyll or solar energy; for the mystically oriented they run on moon energy. Nor can we put them in the animal kingdom – they need a substrate to ‘grow’ and you need seeds or more precisely spawn to grow them. For our purposes – sustainable integrated agriculture – they are a key ingredient. They…

Dear Amandeep Sir

I feel this is an appropriate forum to discuss my idea. I am thinking of treating the waste water from nearby cities which can be utilized to irrigate nearby agricultural lands. This water can be mixed with desired nutrients (manured water) to lessen the use of fertilizers.

Since good quality water is scarce, water of marginal quality is considered for use in agriculture. Although there is no definition of 'marginal quality' water, for all practical purposes it can be defined as water that possesses certain characteristics which have the potential to cause problems when it is used for an intended purpose. For example, brackish water is a marginal quality water for agricultural use because of its high dissolved salt content,
and municipal wastewater is a marginal quality water because of the associated health hazards. From the viewpoint of irrigation, use of 'marginal' quality water requires more complex management practices.
